Chief Justice Madsen recieving the Woman of the Year Award from Seattle University School of Law Dean Annette Clark
Dear Friends: Join me in electing Chief Justice Barbara Madsen to the Washington State Supreme Court, Position 5. I know Barbara and I am voting for her because she is extremely well-qualified, experienced, impartial and dedicated to justice. Join me in voting for Chief Justice Madsen. – Justice Robert F. Utter, Ret.
Chief Justice Barbara Madsen, who was unanimously elected by her nine member Supreme Court, is one of a handful of women in the country who serve as Chief Justice. Barbara’s election as Chief marks Washington state as the only state in the United States where our top state and federal-elected officials – the Governor, our two US Senators and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court – are women.
Chief Justice Madsen has worked all her life to level the playing field so all people are treated fairly and with dignity under the law. As a former public defender, a city attorney, a prosecuting attorney, a Municipal judge, a Presiding judge, and now a Supreme Court Chief Justice, Barbara has made critical decisions affecting people’s lives with a real understanding of the problems they face. She has lived and worked in both Eastern and Western Washington and understands the challenges of life in a big city and a small town.
Chief Justice Madsen has been a champion for people facing the toughest issues of our day – child abuse, family and domestic violence, equal access to justice for all, with integrity and impartiality – setting aside her own opinions on the issues, even when doing so has been personally tough.
Barbara’s base of support is as unique as the woman herself. Many people running for office have support from either Democrats or Republicans; business or labor; and either conservative or liberal action committees. What makes Chief Justice Madsen unique is that she has a enthusiastic support from a wide variety of Washington citizens because of her demonstrated commitment to justice and the rule of law. We hope you will join in giving your support too!
